Talk: Verbal Aspect in Istro-Romanian

Core Research Area Multilingualism, Migration and Cultural Transformation

invites to the talk

Verbal Aspect in Istro-Romanian

by Fabian Helmrich, Oxford University

To begin at 13:30 on Tuesday the 19th of May

in the room 0033010224 (UR 33.1.224) in the Wallgebaude in Merangasse 70.

A short abstract of the talk:

Through probably centuries of contact with Čakavian, the verbal system in the two Istro-Romanian dialects, Vlåški and Žejånski, has changed profoundly. This presentation will discuss affixes and categories which were borrowed from Čakavian into Istro-Romanian. On the basis of corpus data and my own fieldwork, I shall show how these morphologies map onto eventualities in IR to form aspect categories and illustrate how telicity, culminativity and durativity acted as key parameters in the aspectual specification of Daco-Romance verbs in Istro-Romanian.
