Translation in Spaces of Crisis

This 2nd event in the lecture series Multilingualims in Spaces of Crisis was organised in cooperation with the Institute of Translation Studies, the Working Group on Community Interpreting (ITAT) and the Arqus ad hoc bottom-up initiative Multilingualism in Spaces of Crisis: The Impact of Human and Non-Human Agency. Prof. Dr. Federico Federici (University College London), one of the leading experts in the field of multilingual crisis communication, highlighted in his presentation "Crisis Communication in Intercultural and Multilingual Settings" how multilingual communication needs can be better integrated into international crisis support systems and how translation services can be used for more effective crisis prevention and risk minimisation. This was followed by the panel discussion "Multilingualism and Translation in Humanitarian Crisis Response" with Ranâ Kahraman Duru (Emergency and Disaster Interpreters ARÇ), Rabia Odabaşı (Emergency and Disaster Interpreters ARÇ) and Gerald Rockenschaub (WHO/Europe, Regional Emergency Director, represented by Dr Kieran Doyle). The event was moderated by Şebnem Bahadır-Berzig and Raquel Pacheco Aguilar (University of Graz). The event was simultaneously interpreted with the support of ITAT students.
